Creating an important figure. Part 2

First, I glue my figures on a wooden support (all those who have already painted 200 parliamentarians for ecw understand me). I apply basic colors and an ink for shading.

Rather than the army painter, I prefer to use Games Workshop inks. In this case, I use an equal mixture of "Devland mud" and "Ogryn flesh" for my celts (Roro uses "Badab black" for its romans). Only metallic parts are treated with "Badab Black". Horses, are treated with a mixture of ink and varnish matt (prince august) for a softer effect.

Then, I use to clear up my figures base colors (a second one lightened for human skin). In this case, the horses. You will notice that I did not lightened the roman legionaries. In fact, I think that they are part of the base and not the model, and I don't want them to catch the eyes.

The skin of the charioteer meanwhile, has been painted with strong contrasts. In addition, I installed the reins (electric wire) to increase the realism of the whole. We can imagine him pulling with all his strength to horses.

Togodumnos will be one of the most important figures in my army and I wanted him to be above the rest. I kept the color used to field his brother Caratacus (Creating an important figure. Part 1), having fun on a slightly different pattern for his breeches. In addition, I have designed a few tattoos.

Next time, we will talk about basing a figure...

Creating an important figure. Part 1

At first, it's important to create a figure in adequacy with the personality of the hero. In our case, it was Togodumnos, the brother of Caratacos, a Catuvelaunian herocommonly represented on a charriot. He had led the fight against Rome alongside his brother. In terms of rules, Togodumnos will probably be one of the most powerful generals of my army, so it was necessary to represent him as a hero.

My first constraint was to find a figure with some similarities to that of his brother. In this case, I used the miniature of Slaine MacRoth ("Celtos" range) to represent Caratacos. A proud, muscular and fierce hero. To represent Togodumnos, I decided to use a "Renegade" miniature with the same hairdressing and a robust body, arms raised in victory.

Concerning the chariot, there was many options, "Warlord", "Gripping beast" or "Renegade". Because of the bigger size of the Renegade one, I decided to choose it. My only problem was to increase the violence of the scene. The aurige and the horses were fantastic but they lacked dynamism.

So, I decided to use "Games Workshop" horses (LOTR range). Removing the saddle with a file, with a little green stuff, that was it. I removed the aurige and used a very, very old "Citadel" miniature, a barbarian with a winged helmet. Cuting his weapon and removing his shield, I got the result I expected ; I wanted that the position of his hands let us imagine that he pulls on the reins.

At the end, I added two legionnaires hit by the galloping horses.

Next time, we'll talk about painting...

Back of the cards

Roro has developed a game based on the system "Hanibal, Rome vs Carthage" used by the Olicanalads. He is actually working on events, generals and rules to build a real campaign system.
This week, I've worked on the back of our cards.

Map of Britain

This is the map we will use to record the results of battles. In red, the tribes and territories under control of Rome. In blue, the pro-briton tribes. There will be more informations like a reference table, countries and roads. Each turn, we will post the new map to show you the advances of each armies and their victories.
